At the end of July, the top 10 teams from the Spring ’14 Lisbon Challenge edition, headed off to London to visit the local entrepreneurial ecosystem and pitch their startup.
With a mixture of visits to startup hubs, coworks, accelerators, legal and financial offices, tech giants, investors, etc; the teams also had a chance to attend Yossi Vardi’s unBound Think Day (unConference Innovation Day) at Level 39 and YCombinator Startup School at the Brewery Building. Both events were an excellent opportunity to network and get a feel of the fast paced environment London is all about.
At YCombinator the teams listened to the motivational stories of Stripe, Homejoy, Songkick, Bellabeat and GoCardless, as well as Paul Buchheit, the creator of Gmail. The event was designed to inspire and network, and that was exactly what everyone did. At Yossi Vardi’s unBound Think Day, the style was less conventional, combining people from all different backgrounds (VCs, entrepreneurs, developers, tech giant representatives etc) to discuss current challenges the entrepreneurial ecosystem faces today.
During their stay in London, the teams got a chance to take a sneak peek into Google’s headquarters, as well as Amazon. They had several informal talks with local investors, such as Playfair Capital and Seedcamp, and at the Investor Day, Eze Vidra from Google Ventures Europe and Bill Earner from Connect Ventures hosted a kenote, followed by a discussion panel with PROfounders Capital, Accel and Earlybird.
The international roadshow’s next stops are Boston and San Francisco in September. Until then, check out the photos of the London trip on Flickr.
